CREATIVE QUEENS @MET ’24

We are close to the end of our celebration of women of African descent who were at Met Gala 2024, with the title creative queens. We present to you these talented and tenacious amazons below. Again, these changing adjectives apply to all our celebrants.

Our first amazon is Nicki Minaj who was born Onika Tanya Maraj. She is a singer and rapper. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, naturalized in United States of America. She attended LaGuardia High School of Music, Art and Performing Arts. Active performance began in 2004 when she signed up with Full Force. Since then she has signed up with others and has won several music awards.

Precious Lee has a degree from Clark Atlanta University. Her  career began as a part-time model doing catalogue shoots while she was an undergraduate student . After her degree course, she went to New York and worked with Fendi, Versace and Ford Models. She is currently registered with IMG agency.  

Then we have Aurora James, a Canadian fashion designer of Ghanaian descent. Her label promotes traditional African designs. She naturalized as an American fourteen years ago.

Jodie Turner-Smith on the other hand is a British model and actress, who has a degree in Finance from the University of Pittsburgh. Her first acting job was as Siren in True Blood, 2013, then in the Neon Demon, where she played Roberta Hoffman’s assistant. She has since featured in several other movies and television series.

Zanny Doja Cat , born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini is of Zulu descent. Amala is a rapper, singer and songwriter. Though she began releasing music professionally in 2014, her breakthrough did not come till 2019 with the release of Candy which went viral on tiktok.
