We are celebrating Cheryl White who is the first woman of colour in the world, not just America, to be a jockey and win more 750 times. In fact, she was so good that she made history again by winning two games in two states in one day! Come on! In the midst of the sexist biases, she excelled.
Meet Cheryl White:-
To begin with, she was born the daughter of an African horse groomer and Polish racehorse owner living in an 80-acre space in 1953. First challenge, parents’ mixed race relationship in very large space. But she stood out. At this point, we should observe that the winners here are her parents and her.
Next, she naturally learned to ride horses and set her eyes on being a professional jockey. Though she won an academic scholarship to the university in 1971, she stuck to her horseracing ambition. An ambition she pursued in the midst of men and sneers to leave the tracks and go to the kitchen.
Then Cheryl White entered her first race in 1971 and lost dramatically because she was leading at first, but came last. One would think she would whine and give up. This girl dusted up herself and won her very next race. And that ladies and gentlemen was the beginning of more than seven hundred and fifty wins in a lifetime.
Yet according to Cheryl’s younger brother, she did not think it was anything to brag about. And so, he did all the bragging to the extent of co-authoring a children’s book about her. The book however, appeals to and inspires children and adults alike.
On a final note, we observe that Ms. White is the equivalent of the Williams’ sisters of her time. Blazing the trail and working tirelessly to be the change for future women of all races and creed.
